Relaxation vs Deep Tissue Massage: Which Should You Book?
Relaxation massage
Relaxation (or Swedish-style) massage uses flowing, lighter-to-medium pressure to calm the nervous system, ease everyday tension and help you switch off. It's the one to book when you simply need to unwind, de-stress and feel looked after.
It's also a lovely choice if you're new to massage, pregnant (with the right therapist and positioning) or just want some genuine time-out.
Deep tissue massage
Deep tissue works more slowly and firmly to reach the deeper layers of muscle and release stubborn knots and chronic tightness — think shoulders and necks that have seized up from desk work, or tension that keeps coming back.
It can feel more intense in the moment, but a good therapist always works within your comfort and checks in on pressure. You might feel a little tender the next day, much like after a good workout.
Still not sure?
Choose relaxation for stress relief and switching off; choose deep tissue for specific, persistent tension or recovery. You can also have a blend — relaxation overall with focused deep work on problem areas.
Tell your therapist what's bothering you and your goals, and they'll tailor the session to suit.
Book in for some well-earned time out — relaxation or deep tissue, your choice.
