Gel vs Acrylic vs SNS: Making Your Nails Last

The three finishes, quickly

Gel (or shellac) is polish cured under a lamp for a glossy, flexible, natural-feeling finish — perfect for a clean, everyday manicure. Acrylic is a sculpted overlay that adds strength and length, ideal if you want to extend your nails or love nail art.

SNS (dip powder) sits in between: your nail is dipped in coloured powder and sealed, giving a tough, long-lasting finish without a lamp. It's a favourite for durability with a lighter feel than acrylic.

Which lasts longest?

Acrylic and SNS generally give the longest wear (around 2–3 weeks looking fresh), while gel typically lasts 1–2 weeks before a touch-up. Your lifestyle matters too — hands-on work and gardening are tougher on any finish.

Whatever you choose, get them removed properly rather than picking or peeling, which takes a layer of your natural nail with it.

Make your manicure last

Apply cuticle oil daily — it keeps nails flexible so they're less likely to chip or lift. Wear gloves for cleaning and dishes, and avoid using your nails as tools.

Booking a maintenance appointment before your nails grow out too far keeps them looking their best and protects the natural nail underneath.
